It's not the China girls.
Nick Fang - Ok, I reckon this blog entry is going to get me into a fair amount of trouble. But I sincerely believe that we don't need to blame girls from China for showing up the inadequacies in local women. The local women manage to do it all by themselves. No, I'm not saying that local women are terrible. I'm actually a big fan. It's just that when they do show their ugly sides, they don't need comparisons with overseas counterparts to do it. This applies to local guys as well by the way. I'm sure Singaporean women don't need to look at a suave, well-groomed, well-travelled foreign gentleman to know that the average local chappie can't quite cut it in the charm department. I guess the Chinese issue has come up because of the influx of women from that country in recent years for work, pleasure, or whatever. Frankly I have no idea where the image of them actually liking prawn-peeling for their men ever came up. I was in Shanghai about a week ago and I didn't see too many female prawn-peelers I must confess. In fact most of the women I met there seemed to be like any modern women from anywhere in the world, Singapore included. No, I must say that, even though I love the Singapore gal with all her quirks and idiosyncracies, I have to confess that sometimes she drives me up the wall. Does she want to be a power woman or to be taken care of ? Does she want equality or doors to be held open for her ? Do careers come first or does starting a family take precedent ? Do they want a sensitive new-age guy (ok passe I know) or a take-charge alpha-male ? Whenever I pose these questions and many others to my women friends who complain that the men just don't get it, the glib answer I often get is : Both. Fine. But that's going to be a little tricky you know. We guys are human too after all. I can't speak for all men in Singapore, but personally, I'd just like a regular girl. Someone who is pleasant to look at, honest, sincere, vaguely intelligent, kind at heart and game for adventure. And I can peel my own damn prawns, thank you very much. Whether she's from China or Timbuktu or good ole Singapore doesn't bother me. |
