Luckily I'm not a "billionaire"
Ju-Len - PONDERING THIS WEEK'S topic wasn't easy. I know my life isn't perfect, but overall I'm an easily contented person and in any case, I think things are pretty sweet by any objective measure. I'm not ill or crippled, I sleep in a bed and shower with hot water, and I don't have to wonder where my next meal is going to come from. Believe me, those are blessings that only a minority of the creatures on the planet get to savour. I don't think about why I wasn't born a billionaire. But I do think about how I wasn't born a Zimbabwean billionaire. ![]() I was born to a comfortable human existence, but I could just as easily have been born a battery hen. ![]() I think about that all the time and I'm happy for my life. And to top if all off, I get to share it all with an interesting girl who loves me (especially the bed and hot showers!). Given how there are more blessings than burdens to count, I've never really spent any time thinking about how my life would be better. I mean, there are problems, but they also have solutions. It would be nice if I had more money, for instance. Solution? Work harder. I reckon I could stand to lose some weight at the moment. Answer? Exercise more, eat less. Much of life is as simple as that, if you ask me. There are things you can take charge of to expunge the things that make you unhappy. Or you could whine. It's up to you, really. So in thinking about this week's topic I guess I've tried to stay away from whining, and to ponder the things that are beyond my control. If I could really have my way, I think the world would be better for all of us if a day were 28 hours long. As things stand, this is pretty much how a typical day works out for me: 9 hours at work 1 hour commuting 8 hours sleep This leaves roughly 6 hours for me to spend on my friends and family, or just myself. I think something's wrong when we spend more time walking around on the same piece of carpet with co-workers than we do with our loved ones. Was it always like this? Are we working too hard? Do we need to rethink our priorities in life? The thing is, we simply don't have a choice in the matter, do we? I mean we don't even get to select the people that we work with. We're all hired individually and then thrust shoulder-to-shoulder to beaver away at the same enterprise that we all happened to apply at, and yet we spend more time with colleagues most days than with anyone else. For that reason a longer day is the main thing I'd wish for now. Call me boring, but I think my world is fine the way it is. I'd just like more time to enjoy it... |
